RHETORIC 9/6

After reading the Bitzer article on rhetoric, my view of these appeals completely expanded. I have always been familiar with ethos, pathos, and logos due to high school English courses, but never thought of them, as well as genres, quite like how Bitzer describes them. When he says the rhetoric is situational I feel as if he's trying to say that rhetoric is used to evoke reactions, whether that be from an audience alone or from a chain reaction due to the audiences' actions. The appeals used are meant to give the ideas they express meaning, and allow individuals to find meaning in the rhetoric in their own way, which is way more insightful than I ever considered rhetoric to be. Ultimately, Bitzer is saying that the appeals seek out a response from people. An exigence, as said by Bitzer is "...an imperfection marked by urgency...an obstacle, something waiting to be done,". Recently, I have been sucked into the Bachelor in Paradise nation. Seeing that this is a television show, the mode is audio and visual, with the media access being digital. The audience typically tends to be younger individuals or women, or really just anyone interested in love. The genre is narrative due to the fact that this is a reality show following the love lives of the men and women. The tropical setting, romantic dates, and attractive contestants are used to reel in target audiences and keep them interested in the show and how dreamy it all seems. All of these elements work together to chronicle the struggles and drama of people searching for love, how exactly they get there, and if they can even find it at all, making the show quite addicting, for me at least.
